"Unemployment and everything aside, the simple fact is that for the most part, having a job fucking sucks.
Humans are animals. We were made to struggle and fight for survival. We were made to fight to continue our species.
Yet here in the first world, we’ve taken pretty much every survival aspect out of life. To lose a loved one has become a horror, instead of a constant fact of life. Most of us will never have to worry about going hungry, or finding a place to sleep, or fighting off animals that would make meals out of us.
Life has become a slow, comfortable crawl to the grave. We’ve invented a system that we invest in, and now life is all about paying bills, obeying laws, climbing the social ladder, and accruing material wealth. We only care about running through this rat maze that we’ve built to keep ourselves occupied.
Consciousness, soul, spirit, electrical impulse… Whatever you want to call it, the fact is, we are meat-computers made of blood and flesh and bone, living out our transitory single-use existences on a tiny anomaly of a planet spinning through space around a star. The very fact of our existence is the result of either a series of incredible cosmic coincidences or the act of some greater being who wished for us to be.
And what do we do with that?
We settle down in boxes and stare at boxes and drive boxes to other boxes so we can earn imaginary points that we use to maintain our boxes and fill up our boxes with stuff. We invent ways to categorize ourselves and separate ourselves from others. We break ourselves up into factions and manufacture conflicts. We try to get to the top of our manufactured pyramid by stepping on the necks of people we have labelled as the competition.
We have the resources and the time to give every single person on this planet a long, full life free from war and hate and famine. We have everything we need to make this place a utopia of peace and wonder for our species and the species we share the planet with.
But no. We choose modern society. We choose classism, and racism, and sexism. We choose taxes and mortgages and 401k’s. We choose the DMV, and prison, and a convoluted money-driven government. We eschew brotherhood and equality and say, “Every man for himself! Me first! My beliefs dictate how you should live!”
To borrow a phrase, we choose to work jobs we hate to buy shit we don’t need, to perpetuate a system that keeps us busy and stressed until we crawl into our graves."

This is quite honestly what I spend a great deal of time thinking about. It’s a strange thing we have constructed, really.
